Quick Thoughts: AEW Double or Nothing 2020

In times like this it seems weird to even talk about live wrestling. Personally if down to me I would say we do not need live wrestling at the moment, I know they are doing testing before shows but we are in the middle of a pandemic and people's health should be taken into consideration. Now am I being a hypocrite watching this show after saying we should be having wrestling shows during a pandemic? Yeah probably but oh well, 2020 started off strong for AEW but hit by the COVID-19 outbreak worldwide they have made the best of the bad hand (regardless of opinions on shows running) and produced some good content moving onto the PPV, a solid card on paper it was interesting to see how it would shape up. An empty arena PPV will be different to an empty arena weekly show.

I really like the set really fit the theme of the show and how it was used throughout the show some good spots incorporated the poker chips and even the poker table it was fund and I enjoyed it, it made the shows name fit through using its set.

Private Party vs. Best Friends
I really like both teams, they work well and while lacking the tag team champions in full at the tapings in Georgia the Best Friends really stepped up to be the main team. This match however really fell apart with Trent and Isiah Kassidy got hurt, it seemed to cause a disconnect especially between the two mentioned. This wasn't a good match for the most part with some good sports but there wasn't chemistry between the two teams and a lot of things went wrong.

Casino Ladder Match: Darby Allin vs. Colt Cabana vs. Orange Cassidy vs. Joey Janela vs. Scorpio Sky vs. Kip Sabian vs. Frankie Kazarian vs. Luchasaurus vs. ???
Ok so the rules for this match are a little stupid but it at least gives it something to showcase people in a fully to begin with and not having a massive flurry of 9 men at once. Jesus that Darby skateboard bump it looked good but it must've hurt. Orange is amazing I love him, everything he does make me laugh so much. Brian Cage is a monster and having Taz as his manager such a good idea as it will help to hide Cage on promos. I did like how it took everyone to take him down. The right man won and I look forward to him vs. Mox

MJF vs. Jungle Boy
Both are good athletes with tons of potential. MJF selling a fake injury was good heat. These two work well together. They had some good sequences and the two work really well together. both I can see being built up a future stars. MJF getting the win was the right call I think he has to be the next one to face Moxley post his match with Cage. MJF winning the way he did keeps Jungle Boy looking strong as well. I expect big things for both down the line. I still hold out hope Jurassic Express will win the Tag Belts sooner rather than later.

AEW TNT Championship Match: Cody vs. Lance Archer
Jake Roberts & Lance Archer have been a good pairing since coming together in AEW. The sinister nature of Jake Roberts really helps add to this act and gives Lance Archer and added edge. I love that Archer comes out beating someone up for his entrance and evidently Mike Tyson did as well. This was a good match I have enjoyed Archer since his debut and this was a good match but I wonder who will Cody's first challenger and where Archer goes from here if they do not continue the feud. Cody winning is the right call I think he will help elevate the title. I have to mention here and throughout the evening how great Big Swole was literally wanting to fight half the people in matches. I'm so glad she's back for these tapings and is a phenomenal asset to AEW. Please use her more.

The title belt however isn't all that good. I do hope the finished design is a step up and respect production was halted due to the COVID-19 outbreak so I'll hold off my thought on it until its finished.

Penelope Ford vs. Kris Statlander
with Britt Baker injured its a heavy blow to the AEW women's division but luckily it isn't as bad as first feared. I would've preferred Big Swole as the replacement but ford has been good. Statlander needed a win and I am glad she did. I do wonder what is next for her being one of the top women in the division. It was during this match I saw they were focusing on Vickie Guerrero on the crowd, I think she would be a great manager for someone. If I'm AEW I would go in to get Deonna Purrazzo to be her client I think that would be a great pairing and help to women's division no doubt. Ford has improved a lot in ring and its good to see her get these opportunities though while she isn't ready to be at the top of the division I think she will prove to be a great asset to it down the line.

Dustin Rhodes vs. Shawn Spears
I don't get this match was a time killer if anything. Why has Shawn Spears got a picture of Tully on his underwear what is going on. Look I'm glad to see Dustin back but this was just odd. At least it was quick but man Shawn Spears is a guy who need to find a gimmick and settle, remember his search for a partner? Is that just done now or is this to go into a feud with him and a partner against the Natural Nightmare. Then again a good thing to bring the crowd down to come back up for the final big three matches.

AEW Women's Championship Match: Nyla Rose (c) vs. Hikaru Shida
I will say out of the gate this was the best women's match in AEW so far. These two worked well together and I have to say Shida is one of the best women's wrestlers on the planet. I really liked them using the props around the ring and in the crowd and the kendo stick which became part of the story of the two in the past few weeks. I don't think Nyla gets enough credit in her role I think she has done well as the champion and I enjoy her promo work but it was time to move the belt to Shida. I think this feud should continue for a little while yet while other women are built up as well but this was a step in the right direction for AEW's women division.

AEW World Championship Match: Jon Moxley (c) vs. Mr Brodie Lee
Now I feel I may be one of the few but I've really been enjoying Brodie Lee throughout I think he has been a good addition to the company. I do however feel this title match has come too early in the AEW career of the leader of the Dark Order. This was a really physical encounter and I enjoyed it. I think this match helps Brodie as a character as well it took extreme measure to keep him down in the end including the Paradigm Shift through the stage that I wasn't expecting it and was a cool spot. I am interested in where Brodie goes now. I don't think a loss hurts him and he can always blame it on the rest of the stable. While I thought it came too early the match did not disappoint.

The Stadium Stampede Match: The Elite & Matt Hardy vs. The Inner Circle
I don't know where to begin with this match. It was quite simply phenomenal and the best 'cinematic' match honestly by far. There's too much to praise honestly I just finished watching it for a third time and it hook me throughout every man looked good in such a unique and fun set up. However, a special mention has to go to Sammy Guevara who continues to be a highlight the poor man goes through such punishment each week and most likely will see Golf Carts in his nightmares for years to come but is a tremendous talent a future AEW world champion. I am interested where the Inner Circle go from here, I feel this takes the place of the Blood & Guts match so I wonder what they will do with Mox dealing with Brian Cage for a little while where do Jericho and co go same with The Elite. You'd have the Young Bucks finally face FTR and I would like Pride and Powerful to challenge for the tag belts after Best Friends. This is a match that will go down in AEW history forever.

This was a very good PPV probably more then it deserved to be. For all the issues in the world and the wrestling world AEW provided a great show. I am interested again where the main feuds go from here as we have a lot of new ways to go with big feuds ending. I think this will stand out as the best show during this pandemic and the Stadium Stampede match the best match of this current situation and one that will be remembered for a good while yet.
