Quick Thoughts: AEW Revolution 2024

At the turn of March we welcome in the frist AEW PPV of what seems to be the biggest schedule of them since the companies inception. I think AEW will need to work on how they manage all of these PPVs with their TV time. Regardless, this show has been built arond the final match of Sting and his legendary career. I have had the privlage of seeing Sting live multiple times including at All In last year and can only add to the praise for his career. It is fitting that he main events a PPV on his final show. With that being said AEW has been strong in their booking so far this year and I think having MJF out injured has become addition by subtraction as it has helped elevate Swerve and Hangman into the main event picture which have been well recieved and with Samoa Joe and a great run as champion is has made the top of the card feel fresh.

Zero Hour

The Bang Bang Scissor Gang (Max Caster, Anthony Bowens, Billy Gunn, Austin Gunn, Colten Gunn, and Jay White) vs. Jeff Jarrett, Satnam Singh, Jay Lethal, Willie Mack, and Private Party (Isiah Kassidy and Marq Quen)
I can't be the only one that is over The Bang Bang Scissor Gang? I just think the two lots of trios titles will be unified, I would honestly turn The Acclaimed heel I think their act (even though it is over) is better suited as a heel act and has largely run its course as a face group, good they won the Trios title but they haven't done anything with those belts since. Max Caster is 0-3 in raps over the last little while so something is happening. Confused why this went so long can we just get to the 'super' group splitting up. Thanks

Julia Hart and Skye Blue vs. Kris Statlander and Willow Nightingale (with Stokely Hathaway)
I can only imagine this is a tag match instead of a four way title match due to Julia just coming back from injury. Either way, all five involved in this match has been doing a great job and I feel the TBS title division is really strong being built around them, I had wondered what the end goal with Stokely is and was thinking it's a good way to bring Megan Bayne in but I guess we will see. This was a fine match I do think the pre-show needed another match these just seemed to run a fair bit long.

Main Show

AEW TNT Championship: Christian Cage (c) (with Killswitch, Mother Wayne, and "The Prodigy" Nick Wayne) vs. Daniel Garcia
Once again I have to say this has been the best run of Christian Cage's career, he is on another level. Speaking of on another level Daniel Garcia is finding is way since his story in the Continental Classic and I am hoping this is the start of a good year for Garcia, he's over and a good wrestler so it should be but we will see. This was a fun match I would've preferred a Garcia win but I think this was good. Christian is on a great run but hopefully Garcia gets a rematch and win.

Continental Crown Championship: Eddie Kingston (c) vs. Bryan Danielson
Two of my favourites in the world currently and one of the matches I was most looking forward to. I was torn on the winner. Giving Eddie a big win or having Bryan getting one final world title run (all be it in ROH) and a singles title in both AEW & NJPW would be a great end to his career. A nice thing to have a match where I'm fine with either man winning. These two have good chemistry and always put a good match on and this was no exception. Eddie wins so I guess we never get that Bryan title win in AEW but oh well it was a great match.

All-Star Scramble Match: Chris Jericho vs. Wardlow vs. Powerhouse Hobbs vs. Lance Archer vs. Hook vs. Brian Cage vs. Magnus vs. Dante Martin
I'm glad this replaced 'Meat Madness' I mean what does that even mean (side note let Miro fuck off back to WWE). Some good talent in this I am still waiting for that Hook vs. Dante Martin match from when Dante turned on Team Taz. Issue with these matches are they always break down with timing and placement issues with so many people. That being said this was a fine match with the expected winner in Wardlow makes me wonder who's winning the world title match for a match at I guess Big Business.

AEW International Championship: Orange Cassidy (c) vs. Roderick Strong (with Matt Taven and Mike Bennett)
Was good fun seeing Orange Cassidy at the Revolution Pro High Stakes and to see his act live in a normal match all be it one with six other wrestlers. I did feel however going into this one that he should drop the belt as Roddy has been on of the best performers on AEW TV the last 6 months or so and should be rewarded for that. I did also feel that to establish the Undisputed Kingdom they needed a big PPV win and this should be it. Good for Undisputed Kingdom winning matches actuall establish them and Roderick winning a belt. Kyle O'Reilly being healthy and returning is great glad he is ok to come back and interested what happens with him.

FTR (Dax Harwood and Cash Wheeler) vs. Blackpool Combat Club (Jon Moxley and Claudio Castagnoli)
In what feels like a get Jon Moxley on the card match we have a tag match just really brought together because two teams just wanted a fight. That's fine, sometimes matches don't need months of build up and I'm sure it will be a good match given the standard of the men in the match. I will admit I did miss a fair part of this match but from what I saw it was a good match but you'd expect from these four. I'm glad that BCC won and makes sense with the legal issues with Cash Wheeler. Just gonna need to clean that ring of all Dax's blood.

AEW Women's World Championship: "Timeless" Toni Storm (c) (with Mariah May and Luther) vs. Deonna Purrazzo
Another story I have really enjoyed is Toni and Deonna. It's a good personal story which is hard to do unless the people have a personal connection like Toni and Deonna. It's a big moment for Deonna her first PPV match for AEW and a chance to really deliver. I feel her promos have gotten better so this should be a good way to elevate her for the long term. This was a fine match I just wanted a little more from it. A distraction and cheating finish means that I guess a rematch can happen but still felt there could've been more from this.

Will Ospreay vs. Konosuke Takeshita
Fresh off his 6 star match at RevPro High Stakes Will Ospreay is finally on the AEW roster. I was going into this expecting it to be a great match to kick off Ospreay being kicked out of the Don Callis family. Takeshita also should be used more honestly so at least he gets a PPV match here. This was a superb match as you'd expect for two of the best bell to bellt wrestlers. I cannot wait to rewatch some of what done was great and interested in where both go from here. I still expect Will to split from the Don Callis family sooner rather than later but still what a first match under contract. Even if it wasn't match of the decade it will certainly be in conversation for match of the year.

AEW World Championship: Samoa Joe (c) vs. "Hangman" Adam Page vs. Swerve Strickland (with Prince Nana)
As mentioned earlier the rise of Hangman back into a main event role and Swerve as seemingly the current top babyface have both been good addition to the show and have freshened up the main event scene. As well as that it's great to see Samoa Joe as world champion again it is weird to see a triple threat match where I would be fine with any of the three men in the match winning. Hangman tapping to stop Swerve winning the belt is a fun story they've fully double turned now with Hangman beating up the second ref for no reason. All three men are main event talent and delivered a main event world title match.

AEW World Tag Team Championship: Sting and Darby Allin (c) (with Ric Flair) vs. The Young Bucks (Matthew Jackson and Nicholas Jackson)
In the main event and the final match of Stings career we get him defending a title for the final time as well. In the building where he faced Ric Flair at Clash of the Champions I in March 1988 it's a fitting place for a legendary career to end. I have been enjoying The Young Bucks current characters leaning into a lot of the twitter sentiment of them and was interested in how this match would end. Would Sting look to do the old school traidtion of going out on a loss or would his career end with one final victory and the tag titles being vacated and held up likely for some sort of tournament. What a great moment for Sting to enter with his family and then turn into a deathmatch icon. Holy shit, what a match why is Darby the way he is, but what a way to show how great Sting is and always has been. What a match.

What a PPV. Not the best PPV that AEW has ever run but the top end of matches delivered. The show was built around Sting and his final match and what a final match. What a way to bow out at the end of a legendary career. Let's see how the card for Dynasty forms off of what could be the biggest month in AEW history in March 2024.
