Favourite Pokémon Per Generation: Generation Seven - Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Generation 7 with Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun and Ultra
Moon was the last main series Pokémon game released on 3DS. Introducing 88 new
unique Pokémon the game also introduced Alola forms which are regional variants
of previous Pokémon with a change of appearance and as well a change of type,
an interesting concept to freshen up some older Pokémon for a new region and
new generation with all that in mind let’s begin the list
Honourable Mentions: Primarina, Vikavolt, Crabominable,
Lycanroc (Midday & Dusk Form), Mudsdale, Bewear, Silvally, Kommo-o, Tapu
Koko, Buzzwole, Guzzlord, Zeraora, Alolan Muk, Alolan Marowak.
Number Six: Golisopod
I have the preface this by saying if it didn’t have the
ability ‘emergency exit’ this one would be higher on the list. A giant insect
with what seems to be samurai armour around it has such a good look it honestly
reminds me of General Grevious from Star Wars for some reason it might be due
to the four arms or claws it has but with the big outer claws it has this
Pokémon would probably pack more of a punch. I like its design, but that
ability really knocks this Pokémon down the rankings because of how frustrating
it is to use.
Number Five: Naganadel
The only ultra beast to make this list Nagandel is a unique
one being the only ultra beat to evolve (as it evolves from Poipole when
levelled up knowing dragon pulse). I really like how it’s reflected as a poison
type with the large stinger on its lower body and how the top half reflects its
duel dragon typing with wings and a traditional dragon look, you can tell its
typing just by looking at it. I think it’s a really interesting concept it
gains the dragon type upon gaining this form and can only do that by learning a
dragon move. Its evolutionary requirements reflect in its evolution which is a
very nice concept and one I’d like to see more.
Number Four: Salazzle
If we were talking about a Pokémon’s ability hindering it on
the list here is one where its ability moves it up the list. With the ability
Corrosion allowing you to poison all types even those that you couldn’t with a
Pokémon without this ability makes Salazzle such a valuable asset to a team as
it is something an opponent may not expect to happen if they battled with a
type like poison or steel. Back to the Pokémon itself being based off a
salamander I really like the fact that only the female Salandit can evolve it’s
something unique. It’s simple and sleek design reflects its lizard like
tendencies but if anything, this Pokémon and its ability made it must catch for
me when playing this generation.
Number Three: Decidueye
After seven generations the grass starter finally makes the
list. I have to be honest I’ve always seen the grass designs as the ok ones,
the designs have been passable but always dwarfed by their fire and water
counterparts. Decidueye breaks the this by having a great concept and design. An
owl Archer is such a bizarre concept and it just works. Owls have been seen as
bringers of death throughout history so the secondary ghost type here works on
that level. I like the idea of an archer Pokémon. I’ve always found archers one
of the better classes in Fire Emblem games and very helpful in tough situations
there if used right so Decidueye makes the list as the first grass starter and
I hope more follow suit in this sort of concepts in the future.
Number Two: Incineroar
The heel Pokémon is another Pokémon based on wrestling.
Between its title belt to the move names like Darkest Lariat and Malicious
Moonsault taking the wrestling angle that Hawlucha has and upped it ten-fold
this Pokémon is even named the ‘heel Pokémon’. This Pokémon reflects its heel nature
through being a dark type which I like it’s a small but great touch. The
Pokémon really looks like a wrestler I’d love to see more Pokémon based on
wrestling still to this day as they always come out looking great and as some
of the best in their respective generations.
Number One: Lycanroc (Midnight Form)
At the top of generation 7 is the midnight from of Lycanroc.
While I like all the forms the midnight one is my favourite just because of how
different it looks to the others, while the others look like real animals the
midnight form looks like a Pokémon version of a werewolf from a horror film. It
has a look where this Pokémon is fun and a pleasing design for what it is based
on. When I initially picked up the Pokémon it was because of how it reminded me
of Zoroark, as I got to use it more and more it gained its own identity from
that which is nice. When a Pokémon can change your look on it to a remembrance
of an old Pokémon to having its own identity makes it great and it stays in my
memory on its own merits right at the top of my favourite Pokémon.
With all the six Pokémon counted for that brings generation
seven to an end. I really like what this series does revamping old Pokémon with
Alolan forms and how this is now being used to its full potential in Galar and
generation 8 where we see regional variants gaining new evolutions much like
generation four with Obstagoon, with this in mind here is my favourite Pokémon
per type.
As of the time of writing this Pokémon Sword and Shield have
not been released yet but I am looking forward to it. With regional variants
gaining evolutions as said previous with Obstagoon and now Farfetch'd is
getting a long-awaited evolution of Sirfetch'd. I am really looking forward to
what else this generation does and ranking my favourites of generation eight
once we get the full Pokédex for generation eight but until that time I hope
you have enjoyed this series and thanks for reading.
