Should Sony Attempt a New PlayStation All-Stars?
I fully accept I am probably the only person who will be commenting on this. Now I know what you are thinking looking at the title and it probably is 'no' and I understand that trust me I feel the same way. However, I do wonder if they could look to revive the series in the wake of more console exclusives the last few years.
It's no secret that a lot of people do not like how matches are done in PlayStation All-Stars and I do not blame them, it is a slog with games having the potential to go on for far too long. I do wonder if in a way to differentiate themselves gameplay wise from Smash Bros they went too far. Smash is a fun formula while you can tweak what you need to be different you do not need to overcomplicate it. Look at the 3 ring 60 man mess WCWs World World 3 was to the WWEs Royal Rumble two shows with highlight multi man over the top rope encounters normally main eventing it's just a case of refining a concept so it stands out for you but is easy to pick up because let's be real Smash Bros and PlayStation All-Stars would have a large crossover in consumers.
Apart from the gameplay a lot of people found the roster for PlayStation All-Stars lacking which I agree with. Look, I get they would not be able to get the likes of Cloud or Snake like Smash Bros do it's an impossibility especially with how difficult it was for Nintendo to get Cloud and well Konami and Metal Gear Solid is a can of worms not best opened here. However, looking a first party games that Sony has at their disposal you could make a great core roster. Now I do say this with Spider-Man in mind and that's the sort of power move you need if this sort of game would ever happen. They announced it for the disaster of the Avengers game that Spider-Man would be PlayStation exclusive and with that if they got him on this hypothetical game that is a needle mover. Looking past that I think a core of first party characters would be a great way to start. I'd look at some of if not all of the following games to begin with.
- Spider-Man & Spider-Man: Miles Morales
- Ghost of Tsushima
- LittleBigPlanet
- Ratchet & Clank
- God of War
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Infamous
- Uncharted
- Killzone
While this is a mix of both games that were in the initial game and ones that have made their debuts post this. You could still use series like MediEvil and Twisted Metal as well these were just a few ideas. I would also recommend using Astro from Astro's Playroom as that game felt like it was trying to build some form of mascot for the PlayStation going forward.
(Please note all games listed above have been taken from the following page which may be inaccurate to the point of this post in relation to games Sony should be able to use

I think that would give a good base at least for character that people know and would want to see in this sort of game. If deals could be worked out with Namco for a Tekken representative for example like on the first game I think it would add to the roster. For this type of game you need a wide spread roster much like how Smash Bros has.
All in all to make a game like this work you need a roster of recognizable characters and a fun and easy gameplay system which the original game was close with the roster but it was a very small roster with a bad gameplay style which drags on. I do feel however with small changes it would be a better and fun game and with the PS5 it would be really nice to see how a game with all these characters would look on the new hardware.
