How I Would Book: Master Wato and The Road to 'GrandMaster'
With this current crop of Young Lions fresh from excursion we have had a large boost to the Heavyweight division. It does now seem our next group will all be juniors as they are all currently under 225 pounds. It has lead to me thking, with the rebuild of the heavyweight scene then the next junior division glut of talent is fast approaching.
With Kosei Fujita coming through, Francesco Akira continues to be great year on year and DOUKI stepping up to be a real champion of note who is the next ace? Today I want to pitch an idea to cement Master Wato as that guy. My hopes were dashed when KUSHIDA left that it would be SHO who then in turn ended up in House of Torture, never had a good match again and won the belt via countout. So out with that idea it's done lets go with former besto f the super juniors winner Master Wato.
I do feel with Wato that he name and presentation allows for a very clear growth from where he is to what he could become. I think in his recent match with DOUKI and also his run to winning Best of the Super Juniors that Wato has the ability to be the junior ace. I do question first of all what does 'Way To The GrandMaster' even mean? It has always sounded like a weird nickname to me and feels like a stepping stone to being called 'The GrandMaster'.
Ideally, I would make 2025 the year for Wato. Starting off with a second Best of the Super Juniors win and this time converting that into a title win agaisnt his eternal rival DOUKI. From here we would get Wato's mission for the rest of the year in which he wants to record title defences over the big three of the junior division. These are Taiji Ishimori, El Desperado & Hiromu Takahashi. With these wins he would be able to establish that he is a true fighting champion and head of the division. From winning the best of the Super Juniors I would space the wins out over the year with the final one happening at Wrestle Kingdom on January 4th 2026. While Ishimori makes sense as the first one I'm not sure who should be the final one. El Desperado is in the Junior Heavyweight Title match this coming January but there's a story with him and Wato which would make sense to conclue with. However, Hiromu is the junior heavyweight of New Japan and even when he's not champion it feels the division runs around him. It would make sense for the final win to be against the biggest of the three and from memory Wato has never beaten Hiromu so it would make sense to end with that.
As for what would happen post this? Well I think new years dash 2026 he would be part of some form of multi man match as is tradition but would be announced as 'The Grandmaster' Hirai Kawato showing not only is the way to the grandmaster complete but he is the grandmaser (and also getting rid of the name Mastet Wato which is an added bonus).
All in all a relatively straight forward process. I have made not on previous posts I believe that Daiki Nagai and Shoma Kato especially will be in line for big pushes post their excusrion of Fujita lack of so it is important to establish a real strong depth for them to come back into in order to raise their stock. Am I biased in wanting a push for Master Wato because he's my favourite? Yes, but with a very clear and fun story that would have a good amount of matches which would deliver on big stages I think it would be a great story to do.
