Quick Thoughts: AEW Double or Nothing
Over the weekend the wrestling world was treated to the first event of the new wrestling company All Elite Wrestling (AEW). With such a big event it was important to make a good first impression which I believe they did. Not only is a first impression important this allows you to introduce fans to the wrestlers on the show to show who will be one of the bigger stars that AEW push. While I won't be going through each match I'll just be giving my quick thoughts on parts of the show and thoughts going forward.
With the casino battle royal it's mainly set up to help establish a big time player in the winner and runner up. With Hangman Page winning and MJF as the runner up this was done well. This match was set to introduce a large chunk of the roster and give a lot of talent a chance to shine. Coming out of the match the likes of Michael Nakazawa, Jungle Boy, Luchasaurus, Joey Janela and Jimmy Havoc all having good moments in the match. The main two of the match established are however Hangman Page & MJF who again were featured in a large light in the title presentation, (while Jungle Boy and Jimmy Havoc were involved as well MJF and Hangman were the main two featured there).
As well as that we still have a number of talents in the battle royal we don't know if they have deals with AEW. The likes of Luchasaurus, Orange Cassidy, Ace Romero, Brian Pillman Jr. I believe Luchasaurus will be signed, I recall an interview with Cody looking to sign some big men to AEW now and he certainly fits the bill. Orange Cassidy would be a great get as well, the crowd loved him at Double or Nothing and he would be a fun addition to the roster.
The women's division picked up with two matches on the show. I think the two women who picked up the wins in Britt Baker and Hikaru Shida will lead to those being the main ones going for the Women's title once established. I imagine more title announcements will come soon but it is nice to see depth in the division with a mix of Joshi and western women's wrestlers. On top of this I think the signing of Awesome King (if she has signed with the company) is a very smart move, her initial run in TNA is still fondly remembered combined with her appearance in GLOW will help to put eyes to the product and the women's division. I just hope they can book Awesome Kong vs. Aja Kong.
With the tag division set up I would honestly have the Lucha Brothers go as solo stars. Looking at the tag roster you have the following
With the amount of team AEW have (as well as the Strong Hearts from OWE) I feel there's enough depth there for the Lucha Bros to be solo stars. My main gripe with AEW's roster is the lack of top main event talents. With Hangman Page needs to be built up by the time the AEW championship match both Fenix and Pentagon Jr are proven main event level stars in the wrestling world, the brothers have both held the Lucha Underground World Title and most notably for each Pentagon Jr is a former Impact Wrestling World Champion and Fenix is the current AAA Mega Champion. Both are superb wrestler and Pentagon especially has a great look I think they'd be served better as solo wrestlers it'd be a good for a Latin demographic to have these two pushed well. I'd love a Pentagon and Moxley feud down the line would be great.
Speaking of main event level stars, AEW has put Hangman Page into a position to become the first AEW World Champion. A good talent but to make him seem viable to beat Chris Jericho. With 2 events before All Out as the place I see the champion being crowned Hangman will have to win 2 big singles matches in this run. I can see it being MJF at Fyter Fest and then Pentagon Jr at Fight for the Fallen. While I feel Jericho will win the match and the title it is important to build Hangman up to give it a real main event big fight feel.
The show itself ended with the surprise debut of Jon Moxley with him laying out Jericho, the ref and finally Kenny Omega. The idea of Moxley vs. Omega in such a great idea on paper it will be interesting to see it play out, while it most likely will culminate at All Out it will make for fantastic match.
